I recently acquired a WD My Book 1140. After one use, in which I transferred ALL of my music and movies, it no longer works. I shows up as a USB device, but will not show up in My Computer.

I've tried just about everything that has been suggested online, but nothing works. In Disk Management, the device shows up, but all of the information is blank and it cannot be Initialized, assigned a letter, or partitioned (any of the typical suggestions given). It simply says "Disk 1. Unknown. Not Initialized." and right clicking it yields the options of Offline, Properties, and Help.

I have given up hope of saving my data. I simply want to reformat this drive and start over. WD's website offers a reformatting tool, but my drive does not show up as an option to format. Is there any way a person with only minimal tech savvy can salvage this situation and reformat this disk..?

Thank you for your time.
