3GB to little VRAM?

I was just playing the Titan fall beta on my computer and I was using 3000MB of my VRAM.

Highest settings 1680 x 1050
My PC specs

  ■CPU: Intel i5 4570 @3.2Ghz
  ■RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance DDR3 4GB 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24 x 2
  ■Mobo: MSI B85-G41 PC Mate
  ■GPU: MSI R7950 TWIN FROZR 3GD5/OC
  ■SSD: OCZ VTR1-25SAT3-128G
  ■OS: Windows 8

So I already have a GPU and don't plan to get a new one till next year,
but my friend is building a gaming PC and he plans to get a GTX 780 3GB and I would like to know if he should instead get a R9 290 4GB? he wants to play games at max settings 50-60FPS 1920 x 1080.

Beta's often have issues, and there probably was memory leak to use up that much vram, that or you were using unreasonable amounts of AA. Read this:

8xMSAA will suck up VRAM in cases where 4xMSAA uses far less and in practice, it is hard to tell the difference.

Try 4xMSAA. It should be massively better.

Try 4xMSAA. It should be massively better.

In the tutorial (Where everything looks like portal a level) it used 3Gb of VRAM but in real gameplay it used 2,300MB - 2,500MB of VRAM both MSAA x 4 and MSAA x8.

Edit: And it uses 3GB in menus/lobbies.
