I am looking at pc hardware for two different reasons: 1) HTPC w/mini-ITX or micro-ATX FF and, 2) new desktop (micro-ATX or ATX). Answers of discussions regarding this topic are fine with me.
First, it amazes me how much I read of real estate issues with either form factor as I review components for the HTPC. Moreover, using an on board Codec is fine with me. However, codec's have far more features than I am interested in these days. That is, 5.1, 7.1 & 8 channel audio. I have to ask, 'What for?' I am writing this post to see if anyone has had any luck (...or desire) in obtaining simple stereo output from a current vintage motherboard.
Is it possible that some of these audio jacks on current motherboards default to a 'stereo' output that could serve as the input for a receiver/tuner or pre-amp? This will be my preferred solution. Alternatively, do I need to roll up my sleeves and identify this signal path somewhere on the audio path on the motherboard, tap into it and terminate it to an output jack so I can accomplish what I need to?
Edit (only moments later...) - I just located this with a Google search so, I felt compelled to add this to my post. Additionally, it give me some sense of hope that I can accomplish what I need to (really?) and suggests I just need to learn more...
Please advise!
