What was the best graphics card when DOOM 3 was the toughest benchmark?

Hi All,

I just build my first computer, after a long time away from reading about computer hardware. I was wondering if anyone could remember what the best GPUs were around the time that DOOM 3 was the benchmark. Also, what processors were the best?

Here is what I remember:

The ultra resolution was 1600x1200 that games were being tested on.
There was the Pentium 4 processor, 4 GHz I believe?
There was a radeon card that was really popular (9800??), anyone remember?

Why do you want to know this kinda stuff? why not say set a budget, and then people can recommend the best hardware regardless of age for your budget?
