Monitor Calibration Question

I have a few of question regarding calibration of my monitors.

1. Is it better to use my monitors built in controls for the calibration, or should I use my Nvidia Control Panel?

2. What preset is best for the monitor pre-calibration?

3. What is the most accurate free tool/site to use?

Set your monitor settings to default and use the Control panel to tweak your preferences.
I have a colleague whom uses a spyder for physical callibration, and it is amazing! Something that no software can do. They are not cheap, but well worth the investment IMO. Check em out!
