Hi guys, problem is as per title; I've recently (within the last week) bought an EVGA GTX 780ti SC, the version without the ACX cooler, and I am experiencing some serious coil whine in game. I know it is my GPU due to the fact that when I minimise the game, the noise stops.

RMA is out of the question, I've found after research that coil whine is 'normal' and does not particularly suggest signs of any kind of fault with my unit. However, as you can imagine, paying around £560 for the best GPU around is not exactly as satisfying as it could be when the thing makes this sound.

I'm running it at standard settings, I've not OC'd it and don't intend to, nor have I modified the voltages. I have no performance issues, and when running with EVGA Precision X on a custom curve, the card sits comfortably at around 66°C, and will max out at around 73°C (target max temp as specified in program).

There was a couple of instances where I started up Far Cry 3 and the coil whine was awful, within around 40 seconds the temps had shot up to 84°C! This is not normal, and research suggests that coil whine can decrease life expectancy.

For your info, I'm running a OCZ 750W PSU, so I don't think lack of power is an issue. I have had the same problem with a Palit GTX 670, but never like this!

Please help!

Thanks

I have a GTX 780 ti, and i often experience coil whine when i have high FPS, especially in loading screens right? You won't need a new PSU, 750W should be more than enough. I know Far Cry 3 is pretty demanding, and if you have all settings on full, then it will work with full force, and the temps shoots up. Mine only goes up to 80, but in the past it went all the way up to 83. My suggestion would be to keep it a little cooler. Maybe add a side fan or bottom fan to supply air directly to it?

If you have any more questions about anything, then just ask.

Oh Thank You so much for the reassurance! Yes, I found this especially on Far Cry 3 Loading Screen as well!!! Glad to know my PSU is good, currently running a H100i which pulls air through rad, a 220mm side fan which pulls air in, another side fan which pulls air in (120mm) to cool back of CPU, a front 120mm which pulls air in, and a rear 120mm exhaust.

Maybe I should try switching these around?

Thanks for the response ! :)

Well, now you have "positive pressure" in your case. It means that more air is being pulled in, than out. Advantages with positive pressure is mostly that less dust will enter it.

Negative pressure (just the oposite) however will keep it a little cooler since it pulls more air out.

BTW, what case do you have?

And oh, almost forgot. Here is a link to a good guide that i used for setting up my fans for good cooling. If you read the whole thing, i'm sure you will find it most usefull. By reading this you should be able to make a conclusion to what kind of fan setup that suits your needs. If not, just ask me if you want, or start a new thread etc.

Seems like you got this under control then :)

Thanks for all your advice, you rock!

No problem. Remember to click "pick as answer" or something like that on all your posts where you get your question get answered. This will help people with the same problem as you to see that this or that post has an answer to the problem.

If someone had done that, i might have not been so afraid of my GTX 780ti's coil whine when i first encountered the "problem".

Yeah I was going to but unfortunately I am not given that option, I think I accidently checked the 'discussion' box looking back when I created this thread. But if there is another way to recommend your answer, then I will. I definitely think it's important that other people see this solution!
