I have a smart Panasonic tv which I've paired with my laptop.
The instructions say to click on a particular icon at the bottom of the You Tube screen to watch it on tv. This icon doesn't appear on the screen on my laptop.

did you follow these instructions?

http://www.youtube.com/pair

your tv needs to have a youtube app which supports this function though. some of the older youtube apps might not support the feature.

i use the feature sometimes (except i paired my ps3 to my phone... since i dont have a smart tv) and it works alright i suppose (but its buggy and very clunky) it does work though.

i really am not sure if it works with running regular youtube on a pc though. i know it works for youtube "apps" such as on smart tv, xb, ps3, phones but never heard of it being used for laptop to a smart tv so i cant say if its possible or not.

if possible i'd suggest just plugging the laptop in to the tv via hdmi and using a wireless mouse & keyboard. first of all its no delay, its not buggy like the youtube software pairing is and you can run other things from your laptop not just youtube.

if you dont want to do that... but have a power source near your couch... i suppose you could wireless hdmi to the tv (but thats a bit pricey for little convenience).

Thanks ssddx. Yes I did follow the instructions and it was instruction number 4 which asks you to click on a particular icon to show the video on the tv screen. This icon doesn't appear on my laptop.

I'll connect via HDMI as you suggest. Are there different quality HDMI cables and if so what would I expect to pay for a decent one?
Regards
Norrie

well... i can tell you with 100% certainty that the "pairing" does work for the newest edition of the ps3 youtube app (and i'm guessing for newer youtube apps on tvs) when you use it with a phone or other portable device. other than that, i really cannot say if its meant to work with your laptop and your tv.

AHA... i found something you might be "very" interested in. read this post.

looks like it might fix your issue!

as far as connecting up via a physical cable which i still do prefer as it allows you to do more than just youtube (for instance you can play netflix, games, movies from your dvd player on the laptop along with other tasks)

price depends on the length. normally i pay about $10 for an inland brand (or similar brand) hdmi cable from microcenter at about 6ft long or so. 10ft or 12ft models are about $18-20. i've used such cables for years without issue. i wouldnt use anything cheaper however there really isnt any need to buy $50 3ft long hdmi cables.

yes there are different quality cables however there is so much marketing and bogus overpriced products (like monster cable hdmi cables) thrown into the mix which makes it a real pain to seperate between quality levels based on price.

generally.... if you are looking for a short length (5-6ft) you shouldnt pay more than about $15-18. if you dont have a microcenter near you (which has good prices) you can get a hdmi cable from lowes for $15 in a 6ft cable. rca brand.. cant say i've ever used them but unless you go with some really cheap off brand or chinese brand product made with who-knows-what quality standards you should be fine.
