Questions about badges

First: I was wondering why I might have more solutions(best answers) then are reflected in badge totals?

Second: I was wondering how someone with lets say 125 solutions(best answers) could hold 3 Masters(red) badges (requiring 50 answers each), 6 Expert/Authority(blue) badges (requiring 20-25 answers each) and 6 Expert/Advocate(green) badges (requiring 5- 10 answers each)

Thanks for any and all help, I'm just trying to use these badges and their level to help gage how reliable information/help/advice from people who answer will be and came across this perplexing scenario more then once.

Best solution

I was confused by this at first too. What is happening is some answers aren't applied to any badges while others are applied to multiple badges.

For example, a solution about a good PSU, mobo, video card combo can go towards earning a badge for each of those categories, with just one answer.

Another example is this thread, which a solution will not go toward any badges (except speed or best answer totals)

Thanks Z-Tech! That makes sense. I had been wondering if a single solution could apply to multiple badges, this confirms it.

As far as certain solutions not being applicable to any badge (I'm guessing they go by thread tags) I don't seem to have solutions to threads without any (applicable to badges) tags. Oh well that's not really my point but I thought I'd mention it.

Which leads me to another question. What is the process of adding/removing tags from threads? I see I have the ability and have in the past done so (added a few and removed a couple) when I found they were appropriate/inappropriate to the question(s) and answer(s) but later see the change to tags has been reverted. Are these subject to Moderator approval (I hope) or am I missing a step?

Yup, if a thread has tags that correlate to multiple badges, if you score the BA it will contribute to each badge.

Anyone who has 5 BA's of their own can add and remove tags from a thread, and it doesn't require moderator approval (Moderators do keep an eye out and sanction users for tag abuse however). Its possible that someone else changed the tags after you, or you didn't click 'OK" which locks them in.

Thanks manofchalk. I'll be doubly sure next time I edit tags to click the "OK". I don't specifically remember doing that so possibly that's what happened.

Cheers!

Glad you guys got this answered - I know it can be a little confusing at first, but once you realize that badges are intrinsically tied to tags, it makes a lot more sense.

Yeah it was a little confusing at first - my mistake was assuming (broke one of my top ten rules with that :pfff:  ). I had assumed that a best answer would only be applied to one badge, mostly because of the more "simple" kind of questions I was answering/attempting to answer that really only applied to one or two things. All cleared up now and hope this helps anyone else who might have similar questions in the future.

Thanks for checkin' in JP. You run a tight ship! Uh, Forum?, Website? Whatever, your efforts are visible and appreciated! :D
