ok, not so exciting for some, but it is for me. This is to replace my two excellent 7950 ICEq turbos with a single powerful GPU. I went for the Tri-x as it has one of the best coolers and flex video outputs, so I don't need a crappy Active DP to DVI adapter. Also, surprisingly for Australia, it was relatively well priced at $539 compared to the GTX780 (which I initially wanted) at $600+. The R9-290 seems to perform better on most games, according to reviews.
I game on 3 monitors, so the 4GB Vram might be useful one day and I hope to crossfire, should the prices drop near the end of the year.

More about : omg bought 290 tri

sory to say this...
r9 290 tri-x crossfire is a quite good choice indeed, but a r9 290 itself is very power-hungry, moreover overclocked edition like that... so, if you want r9 290 crossfire, you need atleast a expensive 1200W power supply to handle them...

Not necessary a 750 or 850w well reputated PSU gold can handle a 290 cf

Thanks I know, I've been reading the reviews since they came out and don't like amds approach of MORE POWER! But I can't argue with the performance and price here in Oz compared to the gtx 780, plus most of the games I play run better on AMD GPUs.
I've tried a few gpus recently and sold my 7950s for a bit more than I paid for them. Trying a new gpu is the greatest excitement for me, looking forward to posting a comparison.
May crossfire in the future if prices drop, got 800w psu, but will get a better idea of power consumption once the first one is in.
Tri-x certainly looks like a decent cooler and will just squeeze in my case.
Cheers

woo-hoo, I received my new R9 yesterday and had a couple of hours to play around with it. Crickey it's long, when they say 30cm, that doesn't include the metal bracket. One fits in my case, but a second would need modding of the HDD rack.
Anyhow, had a couple of hours to play last nigh and got a nice 1060MHz core o/c and 6500MHz on the memory, so must be Hynix. Will have another play tonight.
