In short, i'm building an mITX pc (Haswell Celeron, 2/4Gb RAM, Blu-Ray drive, SSD & a dedicated GPU.. Probably a 210/610/620) and i'm not wanting to put windows on it.. So it's come to SteamOS, Linux or OpenElec/XBMC
I was originally thinking of OpenElec/XBMC as it's got all the media things covered.

BUT I would also like to play on my Minecraft server (I have a dedicated server running, so this pc wouldn't be doing all the grunt) if at all possible! Since i'm not sure if you'd be able to run Minecraft through XBMC (although it CAN run on linux) I started thinking of running SteamOS on the pc instead..

Is anyone able to give me some helpful hinters as to which route I should take? I've never used Linux before, so be gentle!

XBMC is just a software package. You can install it on top of Linux, Windows, or Mac. Some distributions come with it preinstalled.

There's nothing to stop you having both XBMC and Minecraft on the same Linux machine.

So i'm guessing OpenElec is a form of Linux with XBMC pre-installed upon it? I've also heard that SteamOS is based on Linux.. So would it be possible to install SteamOS with XBMC and Minecraft? Or am I just being overly hopeful?
I'd just like the option of upgrading some parts to something a bit more powerful and then be able to do some light gaming of some indie games in the future if I wanted!

Their Wiki states that "OpenELEC is an embedded operating system built specifically to run XBMC". XBMCbuntu is a similar competitor.

I'd get SteamOS, then install XBMC over that. Should be easily possible, though you might need to log out and back in to change between them. I haven't had a serious play with SteamOS yet, though.
