CPU - Xeon x3220 G0

HSF - Stock

New HSF - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=35-271-001

My issue - gotta have my computer! Took off the old broken fan and stuck a huge floor fan in the side of the case with the bare Heatsink. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Lasko-Pro-Performance-High-Velocity-Pivoting-Blower-Fan-4905/202185788

My temps are stay at 50c and i am getting peaks of 65c according to HWmonitor

My question is how bad is it honestly to run my pc liem this for a few days until my new HSF gets here???

Also, how bad is it to run my cpu at its max or above its max. Say I ran it at 65c or 70c for 2 hours, how bad is that? Cause when my fan failed i didnt notice it my pc just shut down and when i noticed it the temps were in the 90c - the shutdown temp in the bios is 100c, thats the stock shut down. Does that mean the max temp is 100c and as long as i stay under that nothing will break?

Are the temps CPU or core? Peaks of 65c on the core are ok for a few days, 71c is the maximum 24/7 core temperature recommended. As you observed, the cpu will shut itself down to prevent damage. Extreme heat will shorten the life span of the CPU, but in this situation I would not worry about it.

I am peaking at 72-76 but only under 100% load and thats only for maybe an hour a day if that. The rest of the time its 41c - 61c

Is the 72-76 core temp or cpu temp, and which program are you using to monitor? If that is the CPU temp your core temps are probably at least 10c hotter which is not good at all. I would avoid 100% load until you have your new heat sink installed.

I am using Open Hardware Monitor and HWmonitor

I am assuming its the core temps as each core has a temp displayed.

Just browsing the internet and youtube I am sitting at about 34c with a room temp of about 25c

HWmonitor gives a cpu temp of 24c and both give the core temps as 34c currently.

Those are still high temperatures, but they won't fry the CPU. Did you clean off the old thermal paste and apply a thin layer (less is better) of new thermal paste? I have a Q600 which is almost the same CPU, and overclocked at 3.4 on Prime 95 (100%) I max out at 62C, but I also have a heat sink with heat pipes which cools better than the type that you bought and good case ventilation/cooling. You can also try to lower the temperature by lowering the "VID" (cpu voltage) if your motherboard bios allows. If it is set to "auto" set it initially to 1.28 and if it remains stable lower it by .01 at a time until it is no longer stable, then raise it around .004 until it is stable. Basically the less voltage the cooler the cpu, and you might be able to lower the temperature by a few degrees.

Ensure a light coat of thermal paste and the heat sink is making good contact, then if necessary lower the voltage slightly. Also keep in mind that the higher your room temperature, the higher the cpu temperature will be.

So I ended up using speedfan to control my CPU fan and at 45c I have it set to go to 100% - letting my motherboard control the fan I was only getting to 35% power. Now my CPU under max 100% Prime95 load stays under 50c
