alright so I recently started toying with the idea of a steam machine that I could take special orders on for my local shop that I run. I'm not new to Linux, in fact 2 of the computers in my shop run off Ubuntu and we have a laptop running Kali which is also Debian based for network diagnosis. But before designing the final version I decided to do a test run on a build out of spares in the shop. Running off a windows installation i was able to install steamOS flawlessly in virtualbox with no problems what so ever. But then when i go to install it to an empty drive it gets to the "Select and install hardware" portion and fails. Im running the same disk image that i used in virtualbox and have tried different mediums such as DVD, 16gb flash drive, and 4gb flash drive. the computer specs are this.

XFX 750a SLI Motherboard
AMD Phenom x4 9950 cpu
8gb OCZ PC2-6400 SLI ready RAM
and tried 2 different video cards,
Geforce GT220
Geforce 9500GT
i know they are older cards and not that powerful but still this was just a test run.
Also the computer was hardwired to the network not wireless so its not a network issue.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

The other thing to keep in mind is that SteamOS is in Beta and prone to a lot of "hiccups" in current builds - it's not ready for prime time, and Valve is the first group that would tell you that.

Have you tried posting this question in their forums? They would probably be much better equipped to troubleshoot, and working through issues like this is exactly what they want with a public Beta - it improves the product and you get to know you contributed.
