Solid build, changed the RAM and case in order to compensate that need of CPU cooler.

SSD is not necessary in any build as long as you have at least one HDD. However, the speed difference between the two is very noticeable.
I usually advise people who has the budget to afford a SSD and a HDD to get one, but if you feel like you rather spend that $70 on something else, then tell me and I'll look through the build again.

That is not a question for me to answer.
You need to value what you think they will be doing with the system and how much space you are using currently, then make an assumption about whether you will need more than 60 GB of spaces or not.
120 GB SSD usually end up with 50-60 GB of free space after OS installation.
