I'm working on a new build (relevant specs below) and I'm wondering if I can use G.Skill Trident X 2400 CL10 1.65V and underclock the memory to run at 1866 1.5V with tighter timings (or even 2133)? What do you guys think - I just want to know if this is a practical idea.

I'm aware that RAM voltages and how it affects the CPU MC and its life is a really fuzzy topic. So I'm planning to run 1.5v for a while before I feel like bumping it up. I'm not planning on CPU OC yet, maybe slight increases in the future.

CPU: i5-4670k
MOBO: Asus ROG Hero

As far as price is concerned, the Trident X's are about $5 more than the current market price for G.skill 2133 CL11 snipers or 1866 CL9s - so cost savings by buying 1866/2133 1.5v aren't significant.

This would be my 3rd build and the first that I would take to OC in the future if my experience if relevant.

that memory has a SPD voltage of 1.5 @ 1600Mhz. so you will be able to underclock it and run it at 1600 at least. anything above 1600 is a overclock freq and may require addational voltage the 1.65v that you see is the ddesigned voltage requirement for 2400Mhz. you may be able to get it to run at 2400 at 1.5v but that is not a guarentee. 1866 and 2133 may be possable at 1.5v. your best bet would be to get high freq memory rated at 1.5V

Should be able to run 1866/8 or 9 at 1.5, 1.55 tops, but.......with your CPU and mobo, I'd just go ahead and run 2400, it's perfectly safe, may need a slight CPU OC for 2400, but is prob just changing the multiplier to 40, great mobo and CPU, you shouldn't have any problems, if so give me a shout

Thanks Tradesman. I'll go ahead with the TridentXs and see how far I can get with 1.5/1.55v before I decide to jump into 2400. I've never touched cpu OC before, so I'll definitely contact you if all hell breaks loose (i.e. i screwed up).

Navalofficer, I understand where you're coming from... but for $5 more, I might as well just get the Tridents, a higher quality IC, than get 1866/2133 rated for 1.5v for pretty much the same money.

I'll check back after I have everything put together.

Just posted the below in a similar thread - (I don't know if all mobos support this or not):

FWIW - I use Trident 2400 with i7 4770k and Gigabyte ga-z87x-udh4 - I set XMP to Profile 2 and clock to 24 (on Memory setting tab voltage shows as 1.65v greyed out) However, on the DRAM voltage tab I set it to 1.58v. I always run stress testing that includes RAM and never get any failures. Mobo monitor reports memory running at 2400 MHz. HWInfo or Aida64 reports DRAM voltage as 1.57 or 1.572. I don't know if this is unusual or not - but it's within the 1.5v +/- 5% Intel recommendation while fully utilizing the RAM bandwidth....

I have an asus maximus 7 formula + trident x 2400s in 8x2gb. I cant run them stable in prime95, aida64. I get blue screens all the time. Prior to this i was rock solid @ 2133 using hyperx fury. Time for an rma?

CPU: 4790K @4.5ghz
MOBO: Asus Maximus 7 Formula

I checked asus ez update and there are no new updates so i think i have the latest bios. I tried xmp, manual and auto. Still bsod for me.

I got my new set, although i runs at maximum in intel burn test, it still crashes in prime 95. What the heck is going on with these mems?

I dont intend to go beyond the 2400mhz speed. I just want to run them stable at the rated speed that i paid for. These mems!!

Ok so here's what i did, i set the xmp to profile2 . Downloaded another version of prime95 28.5 from a different site. Closed ai suite( temp monitoring) and ran prime95. Now im doing 20min already. If i reach 30 min without bsod then im good. I dont think any other game or application will stress my pc the way prime95 does.

I think the main culprits for my blue screen are:
1) Bad copy of prime95
2) Running temp monitoring software like ai suite in the background.

I tried xmp 1 and 2 and found that 2 is better even though they're almost identical (2401 for xmp1 and 2399 for xmp2) timings are the same 10-12-12-31
