Oh it'll be fine.On a more humorous note:I'm gonna shave one leg, lay in bed, rub my legs together, and it'll feel like my dream woman is really there!!!

As much as I dislike FB, I really don't think the Occulus Rift is in some sort of danger of becoming what many fear. Some developers will devolop games, other wil develop social stuff and others will develop stuff no one even thought about. In that, nothing changes. And if with FB's $, the Occulus Rift comes to the consumer earlier (with the quality originally intended, of course), I can't say I'm against it.

Talking to each other via a Skype like tech obviously makes zero sense if BOTH participants are wearing the goggles - since you'd be looking at each other wearing said goggles. I'm not sure about you lot, but I prefer to look someone in the eyes when I'm talking to them - not with half their face covered by impenetrable goggles.

+1000. Same goes for the so-called medical applications as described here, as well as the business ones; as long as the person's face is half-covered by these goggles any attempt to do a face-to-face is just as ridiculous as that poor Photoshop job in the first pic.

i'm one of the people who get a bad taste in the mouth seeing Facebook buy Oculus, but I find it a bit difficult to explain why. I think it's because I don't like everything to be interconnected - I want to keep my Facebook account and my gaming time separate. I don't want to be datamined while playing games. And I don't want ads or micropayments in my games.

Oculus and VR will start through gaming.. then as it picks up speed, it'll move into other areas and become more mainstream. Just like the internet did originally... at first it was just tech people, but slowly it progressed into what it is today.

Three ways Facebook can REALLY use Oculus Rift:1) Track usage, interests, location. Each time you connect the hardware the driver will update Facebook database of the above;2) 3D adds. Targeted advertising Facebook/Google style based on their databases generated 3D objects overlayed in any bundled software to use for events, settings, etc.3) Real world advertising. Slapping Facebook logo on actual hardware, showing as sponsor at events using the Rift, etc

Watch Ed Baig's video about Oculus VR on USA Today, remember that Facebook is all about the money, stir well with some real life Eric Cartmans, and you have.....virtual porn / hook ups.Facebook becomes F@&)book - film at 11. (Yuck!)

So many short sighed people on here. The facebook buy of OR is a great thing. It's still going to be a gaming headset, but now it'll also get more development for other uses and push it into the main stream, not just as a niche device.

Most tech that we use for gaming has a non-gaming mainstream component. You think Nvidia / AMD make the bulk of their money from gaming applications of their hardware? No.You think the internet was created for gaming? No.

With Oculis Rift being a main stream device, you'll get a lot more support for it and the company will have the financial backing to make it even better than you ever hoped it could be.

Feel free to not buy it when it comes out. I'll be enjoying TES 6 on it, living it up, and you'll still be using some POS monitor. Doesn't bother us hardware enthusiasts one bit if you don't buy it.

A large number of developers have already come out and said that they will no longer be supporting the occulus rift after being bought by Facebook, and I don't blame them, I will be waiting for the next big virtual reality headset that doesn't sell its self out to such an evil company like Facebook

One developer (of Minecraft) doesn't constitute a large number.I know seemingly alot of folk are irked at the moment, but once this technology is readily available to the public (soon), most will forget all their facebook woes. Especially developers who can make some very handsome money with this technology. I don't care what company owns Oculus, as long as the product is quality-built, works as advertised, and keeps me entertained - that's what I'll be paying for. I've always thought Oculus would be bought by some big company... I was entertaining the possibility of Apple, Google, Valve, or Microsoft for the most likely candidates, but nevertheless: at the end of the day Facebook has a big wallet, and now so too does Oculus; which means they can serve up a better tested, true quality VR product. I for one, still can't wait!

I can put my 2 cents in 2 to 4 years, the anime Movie Summer Wars would something to this VR Thing, and also involve non-VR Communication too, but when it comes to advancements, by 2018 the systems will connect to "Brain-wave" communication with the VR, something that matches to the Sword Art Online and .Hack Animes in much of the cases, and even might even be risky too, but not out of the question.

Facebook, be ready for a lawsuit from Apple, for any chat application which starts with face would sound similar to facetime.

VR projects should have a phase where instead of computer rendering, they feasibility test (goggle resolution) with 3d cameras (mounted in front of their eyes ). So for example if testing whether a shopping vr app would work, actually go shopping, while seeing only through the front mounted cameras.
