Small office server build

Hello,

I'd like some advice on building a server for a small business. The server needs to be accessed by at least 12 people and at some point even as many as 20 computers. The server will mostly be used for simple word and excel document storage. I think a firewall would be essential as some of the employees aren't that computer literate so currently the hardware is often infected with viruses. Remote backup would be useful, as well as some form of management software.

I've built a couple of PCs before but before I agree to commit to building this network I'd like to know if I'm in way over my head. I have next to no experience with networking before so is it unrealistic for me to take on this build?

Couple of questions;

What OS should I be considering?

Should I simply build a pretty standard PC that has a big HDD or should I take a different route?
