Can I connect my blu ray player to my touchscreen laptop to watch a dvd?

I need to connect my Samsung blu ray player to my Windows 8 Touchscreen laptop (which has no dvd player already on it) to watch a dvd. I really need some help, I have already tried connecting the HDMI cable from the dvd player to the laptop, but nothing pops up when I put a disc in. Maye I have to open some files? Download something? I'm not sure.

Most laptops only have a HDMI-out port and not one that can accept an input.
