Hello again everyone,

So I asked some questions and opinions about my last build and I really think I want to build a Intel tig now, I think building computers is literally addictive, at least for me lol.

So I think I will pick most of yhe components as I go, depending on what I can find deals on, etc. But some parts obviously should be determined ahead of time, one being the cpu, I am pretty sure I was going to go with the 4770k, but then I read that for gamers etc that a i5 4670k is just as good, so what should I get (it can also be something else too), I was also thinking about getting a Xeon 1230v3, but I am not familiar with the Xeon at all. It will be a semi budget rig but not like super budget, I want best performance for the dollar. After the cpu, which gpu should go with a build like this? I was thinking about a GTX 770, but I am open to suggestions, keep it under 400. Those are obviously the 2 majors for this build so any input would help.

Thanks all,
Rich

I think you might have answered right as I edited my post. I mentioned that I have really been thinking about trying out the Xeon 1230v3, from what I have read, it is basically a i7 without any kind of integrated graphics and since it's going to be a primary gaming rig and will have a graphics card I was thinking it might be a possible candidate, but I am not familiar with the Xeon, let alone ever using one. Also like I mentioned in post, I was thinking about the GTX 770, but a friend of mine actually emailed me and asked if I wanted to buy his hardly used
R9 290 (eager crypto miner, didn't work out and is now selling the 2 extra cards hehe, his loss, my gain! Lol).... Should I go that route instead? I really never use Nvidia gpu's, but that being said that doesn't mean I am opposed tho.

Thanks,
Rich

Whats your build for?

xenon is great, but requires costly motherboards, more ram, and arent as single core fast as i5. For gaming/budget i5 would be better, if your editing rendering and such the xenon might pull ahead.

You basically hit on exactly what I was kinda thinking, I was worried about the required motherboard for the Xeon, so I think the i5 4670k is the way I will be heading. What do you think about the graphics card? Gtx770, or a little extra for the hardly used r9 290, shoot im may even be able to get the price down more or even trade him for something hehe.

Another question for you (or anyone), this new build I would like to make the color scheme my favorite colors orange and silver. Is there a mobo anyone can recommend that would fit that color scheme? I was thinking about theGIGABYTE GA-Z87X-O but it doesn't seem to have good reviews

as for color scheme, i only remember seeing one orange motherboard and it wasnt a top performer in that review. As far as 770 vs 290. the 290 will edge out performance wise, not by much. But is more power hungry, runs hotter, and is louder. I personally going new would buy the 770 over a used 290. Maybe x might swuade me, but probably not, and my programs are cuda enabled. But if you want to help out a friend theres really not a con i guess. Make sure its a evga, msi, amd, gigabyte with good cooling fans though. And price wise theyre like the same new, so make sure you buy it for less than $300 if you are from your friend.

Hrmm, Where do you shop that the GTX 770 and the R9 290 are the same price? And no, I am not being a smart ass here, I literally want to know hehe. Because everyone I went there was at LEAST a $100 difference between the 2, the 770 was anywhere from $325 to $375 and the R9 290 is $470-$500. The R9 290 from my friend is a Sapphire I do believe but I would need to double check on that one. Thanks tho for the replies.

Ah, true that, sorry had 280x in my mind. Had just checked mail and was email from tiger with the 280x on sale, and though huh that's the same price point as mine. Do really apologize. But as far as the 770 and 290 performance wise, both cards are blow for blow, amd better in some by a few fps, and NVidia better in others by a few fps. Gaming wise, theyre blow for blow, again if buying new id personally go 770, but depending what price you can get the 290 for I guess that's your decision cant go wrong either way. Both cards are great cards, the 290 on water is just sweet.
