I'm building a pc and I kind of want to put more money towards my graphics card so my question is, should i use steam os? My system will primarily be for gaming but I'd also like to get some work done. Just stuff like using word and powerpoint or something equivalent. Can you do stuff like that on SteamOS? Can I browse the internet, download songs and most of the things I could do on a normal pc with windows?

More about : steamos

1. SteamOS is a Linux variant, dedicated to running Steam games.
2. It is not quite finished yet
3. Word/Powerpoint equivalent = LibreOffice or OpenOffice. Almost but not quite 100% compatible.

Instead of SteamOS (which is almost completely gaming oriented)....you might try a regular Linux distro. Linux Mint, Ubuntu or others.
Or simply buy a Windows license.

When building a PC, the OS is just as much a part of the build as is the GPU/CPU/RAM/whatever...

Maybe you should consider getting 2 hard drives, or 2 partitions on the same drive, install Windows on one and SOS on the other. BTW it's legal to copy Win7 from a computer with an existing copy (legitimately installed) and install it onto another.

[edit] you can use Google Drive to edit MS documents and any non-game program for Windows has a Linux/Debian equivalent

Given a retail version, yes. You can install it on a new PC. OEM, no. And as always, 1 license, 1 PC.
But with a PC change, it should be reinstalled. Just a 'clone' may not even boot.

I cloned my Win7 off of my old Compaq and it boots fine, I made sure to uninstall all of the programs and sys settings though.

That does not always work.

I really hope SteamOS becomes a good and popular OS.
It does have advantages that windows does not offer.
1.Its free. That is great because changing from windows 0S wont cost a thing. Also that means saving money for other components when building PC.
2.Although I have not used it,I dont think it will have the lousy interface Windows 8 has.
3.Gaming Oriented

It will be fun to check out, but I'd keep in mind, it's at its early stages and still evolving.
