i have a HP Pavilion p6-2388ea and it is untouched inside but i would like to know if there's any thing i should upgrade for optimal performance. Also if i only upgraded the ram to 16gb would it make a difference and would the psu have to be swapped or would it suffice.

If you game I would upgrade the video card and add in a SSD ( if you do not mind spending the money).
If you are doing this I would upgrade the psu while you are at it at least to 600w or 700w.
As for the RAM question, you should not need to upgrade the psu just for it.
If you do not game then the video card is fine and I would look at a SSD to install. You should not need to upgrade the psu at this point.

A good upgrade would be:

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 760K
RAM: You have enough RAM.
GPU: GTX 750Ti
