I formatted my USB to use NTFS file system and was amazed to use that 66 MB of my 8GB USB is occupied. How is this possible? shouldn't formatting mean everything in the USB is obliterated without a single trace (okay, that may have been exaggerating, but you know what I mean). thanks

Check NTFS file system description, there are couple of hidden files like $MFT which do take place. And I would not brag "loss" of 0.8% of the capacity.

The only reason to format it as NTFS is to be able to store large (>4gb) files. Your TV won't read it, and your car won't read it.

there is always lost space due to the file system.

formatting a flashdrive as ntfs isnt really required unless as alabalcho stated you need to transfer large files. i have one formatted in this manner for that purpose.
