I recently finished a new gaming rig for myself (I plan to add a 2nd GPU next year) and it was around the 2.3k mark. I set the SSDs on RAID 0 to get as much out of the PC as I can.
If you want to spend the extra money to hit 2.5k, you can also get a nice wireless adapter if you don't have Ethernet access. I use a Premiertek HT-H10DN Wi-Fi Adapter IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Up to 300Mbps Wireless Data Rates WPA2. It costs $30 on newegg and works way better than any wifi adapter I've ever used. If you don't need one and have 1 nice monitor, I'd go for a 2nd monitor to dual screen. If you have 2, maybe consider Eyefinity?
