The trouble is that it's really hard to moderate. Also, if it's a chat built into the site itself then it can be a real bandwidth hog.

it would go to pot so quickly it's untrue, and where do you look, imagine 100 people all talking at once, sure you could go to a 'room' but then you'd only be talking to one person, it'd be worse than a thread as no-one else can join in, you'll just get bad answers quicker.

Even if you get good answers they will not persist for anyone else to benefit from.

It would be very, very tempting. Though like the others mentioned here, it would go to dump relatively speedily. Especially if users started hopping in to ask tech support questions, and harangue experts for assistance in real-time. Perhaps something to consider in the future.
