my laptops running so slow!!

Hi, could anyone help me with my laptop problem? My Dell laptop is running real slow and most of the time fails to load pages. Also, there are many pop up ads and the page often redirects to another page which is so annoying while im trying to use my computer . Can i fix it myself? Do i need to send it away?
please help!!
