Monitor keeps shutting off and wont turn back on

Hello every now and then my monitor will just shut off (the lights and everything) and wont every turn back on. That is, until i switch the power cable. the cable is the same type that powers a pc so i have a bunch laying around, but im just curious what is making it do that, and why just switching the power cable makes it work again. Sounds like its overheating and tripping a breaker that only gets reset when you pull the plug
or
its losing power and there's a breaker switch built into the ac jack (on the monitor) that can only be reset by removing the plug from it (we had a bunch of those monitors here at work and every month we do a generator test... You can imagine all the phone calls from people thinking their monitor just died.
