Hello everyone,

I have a SMC8014WN router downstairs connected with a cable line.
Here's a picture: http://www.broadbandsupport.net/site_images/hardware/modem/smc/smc8014wn-res.png

I do not have a cable line in my room.
I want to set up a desktop upstairs in my room.

I was wondering if there is anyway for me to get internet connection to my desktop upstairs. I have an old router from my last internet provider.
It's a 2Wire 2700HG-E, and it plugs into a phone line, not a cable line. Here's a picture of the back: http://www.spazmatic.net/broadband/2wire/2700hg/images/AddtlConfig_FactoryDefault.gif

I have a plug in my room for a phone line.

I just plugged the 2Wire router into the the phone line plug and connected the ethernet cable to my desktop.

My internet on the desktop now says "Local Only".

Is there any way I can get internet connection upstairs?

Your old router uses DSL and needs what is called a dslam on the far end it does not talk to anything else. It would never be cost effective to try to buy one since really only a telco uses them.

If you are very lucky you may actually have cat5 or cat5e cable being used for your telephone lines. If you take the wall plate apart and look at the wires you may be able to use it for data. If there are 8 wires it is likely ethernet cable. You would have to trace the wires back and see if there is any way to get a wire from the room with the router up to your room. You could then just replace the phone jacks with ethernet rj45 jacks and plug you pc it.

If you see the old style red, green, yellow, black wires it will likely not work.
