I'm new to computer gaming and haven't actually bought the setup yet, but I want to make sure it will work with new games. Like is the motherboard not good enough? Is the GPU too weak? etc.

Intel Core i5 4440 quad core 3.1ghz processor
ASUS H81M-PLUS motherboard
8gb RAM
2GB AMD Radeon R7 260x

Will it run smoothly? What sort of settings am I looking at high low?

Yes, it will run smoothly. Use a mix of high and ultra settings at 1080p resolution, then scale back to all high if you need to.

Okay cool, are there any cheaper processors/graphics cards that would give me similar results for lesser price? I've been googling and researching for days I can't decide.

you should be able to play on medium-high settings, the 260x is basically an hd7790, while alright, is still a budget card.

Honestly, I'd personally get the 6 core fx 6300 and used the saved money to get a better gpu like the r9 270x

but if not, your build is decent for the price. Be warned though as I'm sure you must have read by now, BF4 is plagued by bugs/crashing. I had high hopes for the game, bought it on release day along with premium, and nothing but problems with it. Played last night and still crashing.

is the fx 6300 the 6core AMD cpu? Oooooh that's okay I'm just using BF4 as a benchmark for like new games to see if it will run them :)

I was looking into getting a quad core AMD or a 6core one but the quads only seem to be APU's rather than just a CPU which seems pointless if im getting a GPU anyway. Would the AMD quad core APU's be able to run any new games? As I've read intel are much better but have no idea really

yes it's the 6 core cpu, I would do whatever I could to at least get the r9 270 or r9 270x (about $180-200), you should be good with Mantle and whenever DX12 comes out. I know many people hate Windows 8, but Win8.1 is supposed to work better with the AMD cpus. You can install the free Classic Shell which is what I did on my laptop and it basically works like a speedier windows 7 :p

The only kinda processors I can afford at the moment if I was to get the r9 270x would be amd ones like the a8-5600k quad APU, will that be good enough?

eh nah I wouldn't go that low on a cpu, in that case I'd just stick with the i5 setup and then if the 260x doesn't play games as good as you thought, you can just save and upgrade. Sorry I didn't know your budget :p .

Wouldn't an Intel i3 run faster (on BF4) than an FX-6300 because of single thread performance?

not in multiplayer. The i3 wouldn't be unplayable but I wouldn't use an i3 for bf4 multiplayer.

Okay decided to fork out the extra £30 for the R9 270, will probably order it all monday :)

sounds good, you should be really happy with the i5 and r9 270 setup, should play anything on 1080p ultra and at the very worst on high settings :D

I hope so because with the custom building website I was gonna have to wait like 14 days to get it

could get past the hideous case

270 will probs run on high. For ultra performance - take a 270x and OC it. 270x will run 30+ fps on ultra (around 45 if I'm correct).

Its unusual to see a prebuilt 'gamer' pc with named parts.
Often they dont mention the reject motherboards from the back door of a factory in China or other abysmal parts picked up at auctions. Thats not a bad deal, considering. TAKE NOTE it does not include an operating system.

Cyberpowerpc and Ibuypower let you choose what you want. Custom prebuilts often do. It is the crappy Dell/Alienware stuff that doesn't.

So does it have a turd motherboard then? I have windows 7 disc anyway so could install it myself, what drivers would I need/ are they easy to find?

It is a pretty low end board, yes. So was the one you listed in your OP though.

Low end MB's don't increase a lot of FPS compared to a very high end MB. It is about stability, not about pricing. If that "crappy" motherboard is stable, you are fine. Any motherboard allowing your components to function stable is fine, €160 MB's aren't 10x better compared to a €50 MB ;) .

So further down the line when I have a bit more money I can upgrade the motherboard? Or is it a component that can't be changed?

April 24, 2014 4:28:56 PM

you can, but it's more trouble, reinstall OS, move all components, but it can be done

Mweh, I'd leave the motherboard if it doesn't cause any trouble. Your first priority would be swapping the GPU. The 260x isn't very bad, just a very entry level GPU. You would have a far more pleasant gaming experience with for example a GTX 770.

After that your system looks pretty stable to run on ultra sets 1080p. CPU's last long in general, I'd only upgrade it if it starts struggling with the GPU (it won't with the 770).
