I'm utterly confused by the spec's chosen. I think that generally, the high-end SoC's are slightly overpowered for where the software and services are at, and I hate seeing absurdly high ppi displays in portable devices (above 1080p). However...I think Android 4.1+ really needs a decent 2GB of RAM (especially when manufacturer skins are operating on top of stock android), and 1280x800 is low for a 10" screen. 7", I think it's okay.

Confused... Bet their profit margin is going to be pretty nice given such low-end spec's!

Those specs do look like a hybrid between the N7v1 and N7v2.

At least they come with 4G/LTE and an SD-slot, which is probably enough to seal the deal for someone having to pick between a $170 N7v1 and the $200 7" GTab4. For the other two devices, I'm not convinced many people would be willing to pay $70-150 extra for only 1-3" extra space and otherwise 2012-vintage specs available on $125-150 devices.

Only if they actually manage to sell those things. I can imagine the 7" variant selling fairly well since there aren't many sub-$200 tablets with 4G/LTE and most sub-$200 tablets are roughly in the same spec ballpark. I'm really skeptical about the 8" and 10" models though.

i think we should adopt a new standard for tablet displays
PLEASE

1280x800 OK for 7", but definitely nothing lower
1920x1080 (FHD) for 8" PLEASE minimum ; 1200 would be nice
2560x1440p for 10.1"

I'm on a Note 8.0 which is the 1280x800 but really, feels a little...lacking at that size. i can imagine 1080 being a little too small on a 7" so for the sake of scaling i think this would make the most sense for tablets of each size group.

Funny how Samsung is putting 1080p panels in 5 inch phones, but 1280x800 panels in a screen with 4 times the surface area.

It's like they aren't even trying.

Guess everyone is going to stick to Nexus Tablets and maybe even Kindles.

Apparently Samsung only want to offer higher resolution on their premium product line such as Note 10, Tab Pro etc. Without exciting development on both Android and iOS end, the tablet market is likely going to shrink in 2014. The sales figure for iPad is already less than one year ago. Guess tablet is not going to "replace" PC anytime soon.

245$ right now for the best tablet. i sold my ipad 128gb with retina display for this bad ass, best tablet in my opinion, i've owned and used more than a few and can say its better than the air and other shit other companies have thrown at us.

I know the N7 is below $250.

But what you originally said was that the N7(v2) was the best tablet. Many people would disagree and point to their favorite $500-5000 tablet, hence the need to qualify "best" with a price point... best tablet under $250. (Or as I put it: there are better ones; just not below $250.)

I know I know. For the price it has the best specs. And all around decent handling and performance. And I consider it the best tablet.

to be fair, anything over $500 really isn't appropriate for the tablet space. sure, people will still buy iPads or the occasional surface sale, but they're really trying to replace their laptops and imo, these devices really aren't quite there yet, especially when i can get Ultrabooks with decent specs starting in the $600 range.

Take my particular case, though. I spend 8 hours a day on my computer at work, I spend 5 hours a day on my computer at home (use my car to go to work). I spend 10 minutes a day on my smartphone reading the news or playing 2048, which is usually when I'm in the john, or waiting for someone when I'm on the move. I don't have a use for a laptop, right? It's desktop all the way.

That said, I like reading in bed. And I go on vacation from time to time, and sometime spend more than a couple of hours away from my computer. Those are times when my smartphone just doesn't cut it in terms of digital content. Does it make sense for me to spend more than 500USD on a tablet?

My answer would be yes, but only if I earned like 4000USD a month or more. Which, I'm not, is not that unusual in the states or in the UK or Germany or something.
