Problem connecting Acer v193w monitor

I have recently acquired an Acer v193w monitor and I want to connect it to my Xbox 360. to do this I had to purchase a HDMI to VGA cable as the monitor only has a VGA port and the xbox has a HDMI port. However, the monitor does not seem to recognise the cable and displays the message Cable not connected even when the cable is plugged in to the monitor. I have plugged the HDMI end into my laptop and the VGA into the monitor and it still displays the message. I got the cable from a reputable source so I don't think its faulty. Anyone got any suggestions?

HDMI to VGA is a scam, one is digital and the other is analog; You can't use a VGA screen without an active HDMI to VGA converter (cables are passive and therefore will not work).

Well according to Newegg the max resolution supported is full 1080p.
