Recently I have been looking at some GPUs, because I want to upgrade from my gtx 660, which I had for 1.5 years. I am torn between getting a Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4GB for $440, a EVGA GeForce GTX780 SuperClocked w/EVGA ACX Cooler 3GB GDDR5, or to wait for the R9 390, which might come out this year. I need an upgrade soon, but the rumored specs of the 390 blow my mind, but I'm not sure how much it will cost, since my budget is $600. What should I pick? By the way, I have a 1440p monitor which is why I am leaning towards the 290/390.

Either the 780 or the 290, whichever is cheaper.
If the specs of the 390 are legit, (and it's coming out this year) then I would wait for that.

Thanks for the reply! And the 290 is $70 cheaper. However, I'm scared the 390 will be $700+ since I have a budget of $600, in which I get screwed over and waited for nothing. Haven't found a 1440p moniter 120hz less than 5ms response time yet, so I might just have to settle for 1080p D=. If anyone has a 1440p monitor with those specs @ $400 or less, I would perceive you as a god.

Due to lack of resources and mobile chips being in such high demand the 20 mm chip will not be coming to gpus for 2014. Q1 of 2015 AT BEST, but most likely Q2, or Q3. I would suggest a 780, unless your running 4k, you wont need more then 2gb of ram so the 780 3gb will be more then enough.

If you have the space

is a great card.

I read the reviews on the card. A person benchmarked gta 4 with medium settings, high textures, at 1400 x 900. 34 FPS. Please tell me his was defective, or do all 780s perform like that?

I'm leaning towards the 290, but the thing is its temps go up to 95 celsius. The 780 PNY goes to around 60 celsius. I think I should just pay the extra $80 and get it. I just need someone to confirm I'll get at LEAST 60+ FPS on GTA 4 on medium.
UPDATE: Found 2 290s that rise max to 72 celsius.
Changing polls, What about mantle support? Leaning back to the 290

Mantel is nice..... but not that effective now. Maybe in 2 years it will be better, but we dx12 is coming out next year, and developers are getting better at making there game engines use less resources. I can play GTA IV at max settings with Ice Enhancer mod at an avg of 63 fps. Just remember that GTA iv does not run on windows 8 :(
The PNY is good, but I always recommend this card if it comes back in stock.

I'm leaning towards the 290 tRI x since of mantle inprovements, and it's 70 dollars cheaper. Plus, even without mantle it trades blows with the 780. Thanks for the advice guys!

ok you can go there i wouldn't suggest so I'm admittedly am a NVIDIA fanboy but i find AMD cards to get very hot and VERY loud i have heard the R9 fancy a leaf blower in your pc? don't mind about the sound or heat? go for it if you don't care about that then go, and mantle isn't in many games unless your a big battlefielder like me than go for it again but personally i like NVIDA for a quiet yet powerful card that keeps very cool, if you have headphones on you might not notice but if you do notice it can become very annoying
