Quick question.. I purchased this monitor awhile ago and have been running it with a HDMI cable but have read several posts saying that using HDMI cable caps me at 60hz refresh and not 120hz-144hz... is this true?
If so I feel like such an idiot, how do I get 120hz - 144hz from my screen?

Solution
Yeah HDMI is limited to something like 1080p on 75/60hz and only 720p if you want 120hz.
You'll need a DVI-D cable, they're able to push 1080p at 144hz.
It's also possible on Displayport if im not all wrong, but your screen doesn't have that port. ;)

So you'll need to use DVI-D to achieve 144hz on your monitor.

Also, when you end up changing to the DVI-D cable, you have to then set your screen to run at 144hz.

Right click desktop -> Screen Resolution -> Select the monitor -> Advanced Settings > Monitor > Screen refresh rate: 144hz.

you are a legend my friend, I don't think mine did.. I would recall an extra cable coming with it.. maybe they forgot to put one in mine :/ .. who knows, only $8 anyway.

I feel like such a nob, been running this expensive screen at half of what it is capable of for around 4-5 months now

I'll take a picture when I get home, tried different resolutions and still blurry on anything past 60hz, changed the resolution in both AMD control centre and in Windows, I tried 75hz, 100hz, 120hz 144hz and they are all blurry (I am using a 7970 ghz edition gigabyte)

I did the above and it was still blurry, went into a game and the image was still blurry.
it is hard taking a picture of it as it doesn't show it well, but it is like what an image looks like before it is loaded blurry.. all pixelated etc.
The cable runs perfectly at 60hz, could this cable just not want to work with 120hz or something?

I think it's the cable. Carefully read the ebay title:

"2M DVI-D 24+1 To DVI 24+1"

It's converter cable from DVI-D to DVI.

Update: Just used the new cable and having the exact same problem, everything works 100% on 60hz but when I swap to anything higher the image will be out of focus/blurry (still viewable but very bad image) and yes it is set to the correct resolution.
I read that it could be something to do with 7970 DVI slot on the card and that one man purchased this adapter http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/171143530014?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
and used it in a mini display port to his DVI-D cable and it fixed the problem.. purchased that adapter and should have it within the next few days, this is doing my head in.

also I get a message saying "wrong DVI-D cable connected use the one that came with the monitor, contacted BenQ about it and they said that any 3rd party cable should work...note that it only states this error when I try any refresh rate higher than 60hz.. so confused.

a) The pins are fine on the new cable, I compared it to the previous one I purchased and it was far superior build.
b) I now cannot change to anything past 60hz with the new adapter, probably due to it being not powered as you stated
c) when I take pictures it looks normal via the phone :/ when really it isn't at all haha
d) I'll start with all the pictures tonight, thanks for the help!

BenQ XL2411T does not have support for HDMI 1.4. If you want 120+hz@1080 you need DVI DL
The only thing you can do is (from video card's control panel) create a custom resolution of 1920x1080@90 hz. That's the most I could do via an HDMI cable.
