Hi i was wondering what you guys think of this used server on kijiji. The server is a Dell PowerEdge 1850 (older model). These are the specs he listed.
2 x 3Ghz Xeon CPU
2GB Ram
2 x 36GB SCSI drives
Dual NIC
Dual Power Supply
I know there pretty basic specs and i would have said more if i can but thats all he put.
If you have any of these server can you please say if there good servers or if there really bad and not worth buys thanks.
Thanks in advance!

It also depends on the intended use of the server. Are you trying to make a web server out of it? Will it be running Linux or Windows? What is its intended use?

since it lists two 3GHz Xeons, it means they are single core

also the memory should be DDR2

What are you going to use it for?

I want to use one or two for a minecraft server and will have to add more ram for those. I would also like a tiny active directory system (like 5 users) also i would be running windows server.

How much is the server? Depending on how much you are willing to spend you might be able to find something with better specs.
April 29, 2014 2:00:39 PM

Well the server is $50 and theres three so i could get them for $120 and i am only willing to spend 150 (ya i know thats not much) but i thought it would be ok for now as a starter server.

You should find out if he is throwing in a fully-licensed version of Windows Server with it. If it had an OEM-license when first purchased, then he should be able to keep it on there as an OEM license can't be transferred to another machine.

Secondarily, you would need to upgrade the drives to get more storage space unless you plan on creating a RAID-0 array on those 36GB drives (not recommended). So you have some additional cost there in addition to upgrading the memory.

A dedicated Minecraft server seems to need a lot of bandwidth to support a larger # of users, so that might be the most expensive part of all (ongoing bandwidth costs).

Finally, a PowerEdge 1850 is a 1U server, I believe. Due to it's small height, it uses small fans that spin at very high speeds. This results in a lot of noise. If this server is going into your house, you better have a well isolated space for it. To me, the noise pollution simply isn't worth it. You're better off getting a cheap but quiet PC as a host.

Ya i have to agree with that about the fans and bandwith. I dont have alot of players on my server so it shouldnt be that bad aslo i dont plan on making backups so the drives should be ok for me and aswell i dont plan on needing much space so it should be fine. Also my server i have right now has only 80gs on it. About windows server it self i alredy have a copy of it so i will transfor it to the "new" server. Thanks for the fast reply

for a small minecraft server, you hardly need any cpu power, an old athlon or phenom would due, or an A-6 or higher. you wont need too much ram, it depends on how many people you want to host. for only 5 users, 4gb should be fine. no good graphics card required, so you can use onboard/integrated graphics, or a cheap $30 card. an ethernet connection would be just fine, idk what you were planning. I host a small server of only a few people untill i pay a company to host it. i have a dual core athlon, 4gb ram and it is totally fine, the server will only use about ~30% cpu usage and only the amount of ram you specify.

are you planning on running a minecraft window on this build, or just host the server?

you may be able to just host it from your current rig (if you have one that is decent).
April 29, 2014 2:45:11 PM

just as a host machine

yeah, you can build a host rig for $300 or less if you dont need an OS.

So, then, I would say no to recommending this server, just because of the noise of the server. It's really meant to be rack-mounted into a dedicated computer server room, isolated from everyone else.
