We've recently bought a new server running 2008 and a new printer from Dell. There was some problems getting the printer installed and running so we have called Dell support and been working on it. The problem is, when they try to remote in to the server, they can't. They told us the IP address of the server is changing and that we may want to turn off DHCP so it won't keep changing and blocking them out.

I'm not the one who set up the server for them but, am trying to clean up after the guy who did and my knowledge about server setup is limited. If I was to turn off DHCP, what would be the ramifications? It's set up as a domain with ten XP machines attached. Would each machine have to be reconnected in some way? Does that affect the security of the server?

Any information is appreciated.

Rather than turning off DHCP, you should just use DHCP reservations. Since you have a small network, it's perfect for that. Basically, you assign each machine to a specific IP address; then each time they boot up, they will get the same IP address. You may need to get the MAC address of each PC/device, and then assign it to the IP address. Usually this is handled by your firewall, so check it out there. Often they show all of your IP-connected devices; you just have to assign the IP to each one.
