Nothing beats having a good NAS for video production. For longer video projects, different scenes can export to uncompressed formats on the NAS (allowing multiple computers to work on a complex render lengthy video), those parts can then be combined and exported to the final format)
There is almost no performance impact if the NAS can maintain a decent throughput and IOPS.

It's almost funny... my NAS started out as a backup for my bi-annual Windows reinstall, but half a year later it was acting as a file server in my university's residence hall for a small group of friends. Don't tell 'em, though... they don't like us using up their bandwidth for this sort of thing.
