This NAS system uses 4 matching Western Digital Red drives. The Western Digital Red drives are made specifically for NAS applications. This would be a good choice for a basic NAS system with 16TB of storage space for all your important files and media.

Optical Drive: Asus USB DVD Writer @ Newegg $24.99

Total:
$973.33 without the USB DVD Writer
$998.98 with the USB DVD Writer

My initial thought was to just create a small partition on one of the HDD and used that as the OS, but since this is a NAS build, we want all the space to used for storage, therefore a SSD is added, dedicated for the OS. A USB optical drive is added, just in case if there is no spare one to borrow for the OS installation. If there is, then it can be remove from the build.

If you guys could update your posts with idle and avg power consumptions specs I think this would become the most useful thread in the world :)  . plus it would be cool to compare the builds you guys have.
September 15, 2014 3:13:17 AM

Thats difficult as some of these are theoretical builds. However I have updated mine.
