In my experience, WD externals are more reliable than the other two brands.
I've got four WD ones, all 4 years old which are still giving sterling service.

Before those I had a Toshiba and two Seagate - - all failed within 18 months.

No such thing really.

Hdd reliability is strange. Most fail within the first 3 months or after 5 years but rarely in between. Some people have multiple bulletproof wd drives and 4 failed seagates. Others have the opposite. I personally have 3 solid wd, 2 hitachi and 1 seagate. My buddy has 5 toshibas. All rock solid.

Lesson is to always be prepared for failure with drives.

I recommend that you buy whichever drive feels the most solid physically. A well designed case is really important for portable drives.
