how many characters and images are allowed in a single forum post? or would a lengthy and detailed piece with many pictures be better hosted elsewhere and linked to?

Lots; I've never run into it. Text usually doesn't take up much space.

Images must be hotlinked to elsewhere; we don't host them.

If the piece you are posting is quite extensive and falls into the category of how-to, you might want to post it as a Tutorial instead of a standard thread. The presentation is a bit better, and it gets classified differently.

Within reason.
To my knowledge there is no hard cap on word or image count in a post.

thanks for the replies :)
i did consider posting it as a tutorial. would "how to make an Intel-based PC fit in a Macintosh shell" count? it's a reverse hackintosh, i don't know if there's a proper term for it, but i call it, the iHack.

Make a tutorial on whatever you want as long as its related to tech. There arent many modding tutorials on Tom's, so it would be appreciated.

so, from here http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/forum-247.html# i clicked 'write a tutorial'; where it says 'select a category', if i choose systems, will it publish in the tutorials section with the tag 'systems', or in the systems section of the forum?

there's a text box for tags, so i'm guessing i should pick 'tutorials' from the drop-down list. i don't even...

hmm... could that be why there is only three tutorials in the tutorials section?

ah, just found this: "True enough. We're working on ways to consolidate the tutorials while still keeping them browse-able. " http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2080331/tutorial...

is consolidation in progress?

finished the tutorial, http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-2156331/ihack.html but the pictures aren't loading, well the animated one is. the ones i uploaded to postimage.org aren't displaying, all the BB code is still there when i click the edit button, and extracting the url from that will show the picture.
any ideas?

oh, and there's a few more pictures i forgot to add, but i can't get to that computer right now...

I'm seeing a lot of images, and following the URL leads to Postimg.

right then, must be something amiss at my end. a-ha! privacy badger was blocking it. (https://www.eff.org/privacybadger#trackers)

there are a couple of pictures still not displaying, even with the anti-tracking add-on disabled. i'll try re-uploading them to postimage later.

a bit late....

but there is a 65,000 character limit to normal forum posts.

i've ran into this hard cap with my W.I.P. headphones guide.
