Building new PC, adive needed please

Hi All,

I am looking at building a new PC as my current AMD 4400+ is getting on now. Can't upgrade to Windows 8.1, as it keeps crashing at the "Getting devices ready" stage and it is time for a new PC.

I am going to keep my case.
Looking at upgrading my PSU, Motherboard, ram, HDD, CPU.

I have looked at the following:
Processor – Intel i7 4770K
Motherboard – Asus MAXIMUS VI Hero
Ram – 8G Single 1600 Kingston HyperX
SSDHD – Samsung 840 PRO Series SATA3 250GB
HDD – Seagate SATA3 – 1TB
PSU – Cooler master Vanguard 850

I pretty much just can't decide on the Motherboard and Ram. Don't really know what to get for it.
I don't want to spend more than $250 – $300 on the motherboard.
Don't now much about the Ram, what is good or not.

Not going to use the PC for games, i know the specs maybe a bit high for a non gaming machine but i want to "future proof" the PC again and am set on the CPU, or another i7.

Just going to be normal PC, browsing, youtube, videos occasionally. Stuff like that.
It will be my media server as well for connecting to my TV and other devices and will be the torrent box.
I won't be overclocking or really playing games on it.
Also just want to add it will run Windows 8.1 64 bit.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all

  1. Well, if you're not overclocking you may as well go for an i7-4790. It usually costs about the same as an i7-4770k, and it's a bit faster than an i7-4770k, the only disadvantage is that you can't overclock it, which imo is not really a disadvantage, especially for a non-gaming build.

That motherboard is really overkill... In fact, it's meant specifically for gaming and extreme overclocking. Either of these would work very well.

For RAM, you want dual channel RAM. That means 2 sticks with 4GB each for a total of 8GB. Not just a single 8GB stick. Having 2 sticks of 4GB each improves overall system speed.

  2. Oh, and this'll be a great power supply.

  3. Thanks for that, i will change the CPU and the motherboards, but looking at the intel website, i think the Asus motherboards are not compatible with the CPU:

If i am reading it right, the z87 and h97 chipsets won't work with that CPU?

Scrap that, i think it is OK according to this:

It does list Z87 as compatible. The only reason H97 isn't listed is because it just released a couple weeks ago, so they'll probably never update that page. So yes, it's compatible.
