is overclocking really useful???

hi guys i recently thought of buying a 1600MHz RAM over 1333. but it turns out that it does not offer a huge performance increase. so through oc'ing i could reach it but if it offers negligible performance increase is oc'ing needed as it is nothing but in layman terms increasing core clock frequency. but is it the same for gou too can u give an benchmark for a normal oced gpu thanks
