You could technically format any HDD to FAT32 on your PC and connect that to the car stereo with an USB connector (not sure if some models have a max memory limit).

Just some friendly advice: HDDs don't like having external force applied to them so using one in a moving car (braking, turning, or accelerating) might not be a good idea.

EDIT: Formatting the drive to FAT32: http://www.wikihow.com/Format-FAT32

You'll need FAT32 for it to work...
Does it give you some kind of an error message? Can you try formatting it with other PCs?

Don't do it. A 500gb hard drive filled with media takes a good while to load up on a head unit. I don't even want to think how long a 1tb will take. Also the usb outlet from the head unit might not put out enough power to run the hard drive as well. It's just too much hassle. All I did was pick up a few 32gb flash drives and use them. It is way less hassle.

if your in a car I would say its flash drives or an ssd, getting a HDD is like walking into a park and screaming: "I want to waste my money and have my belongings break!!!"

I had a platter hard drive in my service truck last me 3 years. It doesn't sound like a long time but I work in northern Canada as an oilfield mechanic on ice and lease roads. In 240,000km I've been through 4 windshields, 1 transfer case, 2 driveshafts, 1 front dif, 1 rear dif, the entire suspension, 3 wheels, and I don't even remember how many tires. This is in less than 4 years and not counting the time I smucked a moose either. If that hard drive lasted me that long, and yes it was powered on most of the time too, then I'm sure it would last the majority of people a good while.

Holy damn, either your lucky, you have a tough casing around it or you have a mysterious invincible HDD brand, I had several that lasted about 1-4 months each

It was just in an asus laptop that I own. It also is in a laptop cradle as well which takes some of the shock out. I use it for my oil trax navigation software to show me lease roads and to give me directions using LSD coordinates. I do agree that an SSD is the way to go for this application and I do use them when I do an install for a customer in their truck. I also replaced my toughbook hard drive with an SSD as well but that's company money anyways and I also really need that one to work.

Most Head Units Only Support 32 GB Fat Storage .
Look for an Ipod Compatible Unit , also the HDD requires a lot of power to run , I Don't think the Car USB will support it .

I say either use an SSD based external drive or just use flash drives. Even though some have had hard drives that last a long while, they're likely to go bad rather quickly. I had an old laptop that I had in a mount in my vehicle for music(connected to aux jack), I was lucky to have a drive last 3 months. Had to put an SSD in it. But I sold that setup to someone for more than I paid for it as I didn't like the bulk of it(made any passengers uncomfortable). Now I'm looking at getting a tablet with a car dock.

One of my friends owns a company that deals in car audio, which their stereos are available at http://www.xplicitaudio.com/single-din/ . Most stereos with USB only support up to 64GB, and may go higher than that but will take several minutes to index the music if you get past 256GB. You may have better luck getting a tablet with a full size USB port and connecting your desired storage to that, as they have faster processing and will index music a lot faster.

My experience with car audio is kind of limited, so you could send my friend a Facebook message at https://www.facebook.com/xplicitaudiosales . He can give you better advice than I can.
