Computer has black screen with a non blinking underscore on the upper left

Hello, my friends gave me his PC to try to fix over this weekend and it is a Toshiba Satellite C55-A-1HL. Its a Windows 8 PC. Whenever you turn it on it goes to the BIOS screen and it displays no keys to press to enter the BIOS. And after the Toshiba BIOS screen it goes a blue box in the centre of the screen which I think is the BIOS password. He wrote down a password for me and said to me that is the password and I thought it was for the Windows 8 password. When I enter the password he game me, it goes to a black screen with a non blinking underscore on the left hand side of the screen. Does anyone know how to fix this?
