Advice on new ~$1000 build?

Hey all,

I'm looking to upgrade (actually, build) a new PC because mine is seriously out of date (Phenom II 720, 9800GT, DDR3 1333).

I plan to reuse my Corsair 600T case, my SSD + HDD, and mouse/keyboard, but everything else needs to be bought. I posted on overclock.net, but replies are slow and while I haven't visited TH in years (nor overclock.net due to loss of interest in hardware), it's time since I'm building again.

I found an i5 4670k + z97 MPower Max combo for $450 : http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1690361

I also found an XFX DD R9 280 for $200 (AMIR): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150706

Lastly, saw the EVGA 650W Modular PSU for $60 (AMIR) and chose to go with it over the 850W Antec that's on sale for $70 (AMIR): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150706

Am I heading down the right track?

Also, $50 1TB Toshiba HDD will be bought, an optical drive will be bought, but I also need some RAM (dunno if 16GB is a good idea? I have 2 4gb stick lying around [G.Skill], but I want *new* if I'm getting everything else new and will just sell those sticks).

If you are not going to overclock, I would change the CPu to a non-k version and get a better gpu.

Mainly used for programming (see username :p), but I also want to get back into playing some games (mainly GRID 2, possibly Titanfall + COD, and maybe some single-player games), try overclocking (never got past 3.4ghz on PII 720), and just 'future-proof' my PC a bit so I don't have to upgrade again for 4-5 years. My computer handles my needs 'decently', but when I bought GRID 2 a few months ago, minutes after starting the game it would crash every time. Games like NBA 2k14 run 100% smooth on highest settings, but BF3 was running at like 30fps on medium...

Don't know if that is good enough of a description, but yeah.

Also, appreciate the super quick responses!

EDIT: We have 4 PCs (soon to be 3 once younger brother leaves to live alone), and I want to possibly sell one or two to make up some of the cost.

Not to seem ungrateful for your list whatsoever (seriously, thank you!), but how much of a performance difference is there really between a 280 and 280X, especially considering the price difference?

Another thing, which may sound silly to some, but I *REALLY* want, is the ability to have a 'matching' component set. I *love* the look (as well as rave reviews) of the Z97 Mpower motherboard from MSI, so I'd like to get components that are black and/or yellow *IF AT ALL POSSIBLE* (which it may not be at my price range)...and as mentioned, I have a Corsair 600T already.

Color co-ordination will cost you significantly in some cases Example:: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202044

Yeah, that's why I stuck to the XFX black 280. :p I'm willing to go black and never look back (pause...) rather than trying to spend obscene amounts color coordinating yellow. And I should note, playing games at high levels is pretty important, but not *that* important. As long as High (without AA + super special effects) is running at ~50fps for games, I can handle it. I don't care *too much* about running GPU benchmarks (but I do about CPU).

EDIT: Any difference between your 280x and this one?

This one retains the black color scheme and appears to be the same? + it's the same price.

Regarding the ASROCK z87 Extreme4 motherboard, should I consider upgrading it to the z97 version? The z97 allows for future upgrades to the next batch of Intel processors, correct? And for $15, it may be worth it?

With the i5-4670k you should be good for atleast 2 generations. Personally I dont feel the need for the Z97 motherboard. By the time you are ready to upgrade the chipset might be different.
