I'm planning to build a PC asap. Everything else is sorted out; now I just have to decide between the i3 4130 and the FX 6300 (and the Motherboard, of course). The FX 6300 is about $3 costlier, so pricing is not an issue. Intel's upgrade path is not a factor. So, right now, which one should I get?

Energy efficiency= i3 wins.Performance= FX 6300 wins.

Hyper-threading and core are not the same. i3 is a dual core & FX 6300 is six core.
For gaming FX is a far better choice.

I agree with Ravi, if its performance your after then go for the six core AMD but if you want a decent all round processor with a higher energy efficiency go for the intel i3.

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i3-4130-vs-AMD-FX-6300, I use this when trying to compare different CPU's although it is very rare to find a winning AMD CPU on this website!

amd will give you the most bang for your buck when you want to go budget. So yeah take the amd in this case. 6 cores better than 2. But know that an intel clock speed cpu performs always much better than an amd cpu of the same clock or even a bit higher.

Very true but if you want a pro gaming hobby and to get into overclocking it would not be a bad choice to start with a z97 as the first piece.

Its like how i put a FX 6350 on a 970.. i am actually currently at a solid 4.6ghz with a pure multiplier oc as apposed to my previous fsb style overclock that i could only achieve 4.53ghz and now have my ram running at its full 1866mhz with a 2600mhz cpu-nb.
Either has not disappointed thus fare but i know a 990 mobo would have given me 5ghz potential with my current air cooling set up.

Do you want to overclock?
Are you planning to buy a CPU cooler?
What's your motherboard?
Those questions should determine your ability to overclock. If you don't overclock, the i3 will be better for gaming. If you overclock, with good enough conditions (nice cooler, good mobo) you will be better off with the 6300, in my opinion.
