confused about display resolutions and aspect ratios

i have a 5:4 monitor and 4:3 monitor.i use single monitor no multi displays. many times while starting a game for the first time ( those set at 16 : 9 ) startup but my monitor shows that - video mode not supported how can i fix this problem and make 16:9 resolutions work properly on an 4:3 or 5:4 monitor (is there any way to do so?) and please tell which would be overall better for gaming - 4:3 or 5:4 ?

somewhere i read that people are playing such games with borders and even i played assassins creed 4 at 800 x 600 on my 5:4 monitor

Well google it and see if you can work out how to do it. I think you need to move into the 21st century.
