Hello all, just wanting some feedback on this build I have going on:

CPU Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (already purchased)
CPU Cooler Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard Asus Maximus VI Hero ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
SSD Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
HDD Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB Superclocked ACX Video Card
Case NZXT Phantom 410 (Black/Orange) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply XFX ProSeries 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

I'll be playing games on my PC such as WoW, Dota2, Watch Dogs, BF4 and GTA V (excited for this one to finally come to PC in the fall!) on a 1920x1080 resolution ideally on ultra. I'll also be using 3D rendering CAD software such as Solidworks and AutoCAD. Looking to overclock the cpu as well. My budget is ~$1500. Thanks!

Looks good, should be a great build.

That graphics card will not play watchdogs on ultra, it requires 3gb of vram minimum or the setting is greyed out, so you cant even try.

If your fine with high settings and not ultra looks like a good build, if you want ultra settings you need 3gb or higher gpu for watchdogs. This also may be a trend for future games but only time will tell.

Upgrade to the 780 for longevity :)  Also $100 under your budget :)

I can live without Watch Dogs on ultra

See above cheaper build with better performance.

Thanks for the suggestion! Is it really worth the price/performance to get the 780? I'm in Canada and can get that EVGA GTX 770 for $350 whereas the cheapest GTX 780 available here is at $500. I'm all for trying to save as much as I can while still achieving my performance needs

The 780 will last a lot longer, but the 770 now can get Ultra/Max in everything at 1080p. The 780 would give you the performance to upgrade to a 1440p monitor in the future if you wanted as well.

As for if it's worth the additional $150, that's up to you and your wallet lol My build above was $100 under your budget WITH a 780, so it's really up to you. If a 780 was within my budget, I personally would get it over the 770.

What if I went with the 770 now (since I'll only be playing in 1080p) and decide to SLI 770s? Would I be good for 1440p with that setup? I'm thinking I'd probably have to get more vram on the gpu

Yeah, but a 4GB 770 is stupid expensive. At that price, you're better off with a 290. A pair of 2GB 770s in SLI will be limited in some games due to VRAM now, and it looks like the future will only get heavier on the VRAM lol

At the moment, how it pans out for games in the future isn't too important to me. Thinking about the best price to performance ratio right now for the games I play. The less I spend the better haha. I'm still leaning towards the 770 as of right now.

You might go for the 280x then. It's cheaper than the 770, and gives Ultra/Max at 1080p as well. And it also has 3GB of VRAM, which will be nice for Crossfire in the future.

And don't get me wrong, the 770 is a phenomenal card for 1080p. I just don't like how the 4GB version costs around $400, when you can get the 3GB 280x for $100 or more cheaper.

Haven't had any experience with AMD gpus in the past.. Always been looking at nVidia and never really considered AMD. Now the R9 280x is a possibility. Now which manufacturer to go with is the question...

Sapphire is a great manufacturer for AMD cards:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 280X 3GB Dual-X Video Card ($279.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $279.99
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
(Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-06-10 16:09 EDT-0400)

And that's a good deal cheaper than a regular 2GB 770, for about the same - maybe a tad slower - performance.

How are MSI and Asus when it comes to their AMD cards? I've got this black/red theme going on and ideally want to keep it going without sacrificing performance. Both MSI and Asus cards are available to me for about the same price (here in Canada)

Both MSI and ASUS are great, I personally prefer Asus so I would get that if the price is right.

Asus R9 280x comes in at $330 after MIR
or
MSI R9 280x comes in at $280 after MIR

Now the question is, is Asus worth the extra $50?

Both are great :)  MSI's and ASUS' coolers are both very good and quiet as well. I have the MSI version of the GTX 760 and it is very quiet and fast. Go with whichever is cheapest/looks the best to you :)
June 10, 2014 2:39:17 PM

Looks like people have problems with MSI's 280x with fans not working and oil leaks from the pipes... May just go with Asus

MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte, Sapphire all have about the same overall failure rate, it just depends what site you go to for reviews lol but the ASUS one is definitely a great choice either way :)
