Replace card or crossfire?

Hi,

I have currently have a gigabyte radeon hd 7870 ghz gpu.
I would like to upgrade kinda soon, cant quite run everything on ultra anymore.

Would it be better to upgrade to a higher card (r9 295x2 would be great, but its a little too much for me as a college student. Any upgrade recommendations are appreciated) or get an r9 270x and crossfire?

I believe I read that those two cards are compatible, but if anyone knows otherwise, please tell me. I would really rather not just replace it with essentially the same card.

Do you have any advice on where to sell?

I'm not knowledgeable about multi-gpu setups, so why do you say not crossfire? I think I've heard it can be buggy, but idk.
