I'm about to buy an early 2011 edition 13.3" MacBook Pro for $400 used and I was wondering if it is worth it at the price point and the fact that it's used.

Quick specs (from Apple's website):

- 2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor with 3MB shared L3 cache
- Display: 1280 by 800 (native)
- Intel HD Graphics 3000
- 320GB or 500GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive
- Up to 7 hrs battery life on wireless web

I am considering this mainly because I needed a lighter laptop to carry around all day to classes (college kid) without needing to bring a charger every time I go out. I currently have a Lenovo Y510p and it's way too heavy to lug around all day and the ~3 hr battery life on max charge is pathetic.

What are your inputs?

For that price point I don't think its bad , do keep in mind the HD 3000 and processor is outdated , so don't expect anything heavy to be done with it . Also get an ssd , it should increase battery life and improve speed .

Would it be possible to upgrade the hardware in anyway? Such as a newer processor or another graphics chipset? Nothing 2013 spec but just a bit more updated.

Does it say that the laptop is just used or is it refurbished

It's used. But the pictures show that the laptop is in good condition, like new.

Is the seller local or this from an online site like EBay or Craigslist? It is a good price but personally I would like to know if it fully functional before buying. Not too sure you could do any upgrades apart from the RAM. Officially Apple says it will support up to 8GB but the truth is you could upgrade it to 16GB.
