Hi

Im currently in search of a good CPU cooler for low to mid overclocking, I have high profile ram so i can't have something too big.

I saw the 212 EVO which is a great cooler. However, i hate the fans on this thing, its noisy and seem poorly made (sleeve bearing and plastic looking).

Then I saw the noctua NH-U12S which seem to be great since it leave a lot of room for my ram with a great noise less fan. The noctua is 69.99 (in canadian dollars).

I love the cougar fans so i thought that i could replace the 212 evo fan with a cougar fan. If i put these two together the price point becomes 34.99(for the evo) + 12.99 for the cougar fan for a grand total of 47.98.

Cougar 120 mm: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1683...

I just wanted to know if someone had suggestions or commentary about this because the noctua seem's overpriced so maybe i could get the same quality for less if I use cougar on the evo? Is there a better alternative? Im a noob by the way, first build.

I would go with the cooler master 212 evo setup. With the stock fan that cooler does an amazing job cooling for the cost. Best bang for your buck cooler for sure. I have used it many times for client builds and it has never disappointed. Adding in the cougar fan would only make it better. I have also fit some pretty tall ram underneath it.

what chip will you be cooling?

I got an FX-8350 but i only plan on light to mid overclocking like 4.5Ghz since i don't have a beast motherboard GA-970a-ud3p. Also, fully loaded i get 51 degrees celcius with the stock fan (which is loud), considering that the max core temps on the fx-8350 is 61 degrees I want to keep everything lower than 55 if I overclock.

I was able to do 4.5 on the Evo but it was at the thermal limits.

Does the noctua bring a significant cooling performance vs the evo or is it just the quality/noise of the fan that is different? If yes, then the noctua is the winning solution for me.

I don't know off hand...google some benchmarks/roundup.

Ok thanks for your feedback!

I found this benchmark online, a 212 EVO with a noctua fan perform just as well than a NH-U12S (1 degrees C hotter).
http://www.dvtests.com/noctua-nh-u12s-test-and-review/

The only differences when you compare only the heatsink (not the fan's) is that the noctua got a better build quality and is slightly thinner.
So i guess that adding a cougar fan on the evo would really mean comparable results with the noctua one with a fraction of the price.

I also checked the specs on noctua fans vs cougar ones and heres the results:

Noctua: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1683...
Cougar: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1683...

The cougar fan actually moves more air 102.6 m3/h than the noctua 93.4 m3/h with less noise 17.7 dB vs 18.6 dBA.

The cougar fan also comes with a PWM adapter. This is looking pretty good on the cougar/Evo side. About the temperatures i guess i wont overclock too much, since i dont have a lot of space on my motherboard and dont want a liquid cooling solution (mainly because of the noise).

especially with the cougar fan the evo will cool your chip just fine. And it wont break the bank.
