Hi,

I drive a 2002 Toyota Corolla and I listen to a lot of music while driving. I want to invest in a better audio system. I live in Canada. Where can I go for this ? I was thinking about Canadian Tires.

Also, what should I buy ? Speakers ?? Amplifiers ???

More about : recommandations audio system

Strange question for a computer tech oriented site. Sorry I can't be of any help.

Absolutely do not go to canadian tire. There are many other stores to go to for quality equipment. For big box stores the only one I'd purchase from is Visions. There are also some good online stores in Canada as well. What's you budget for the stereo and what type of music do you listen to?

I'd say my budget is about 500$ max. I dont want to ruin myself.

As for music, I listen mostly to hip-hop and electronic music.

For that budget I'd do this:
Head Unit

Front speakers

I wouldn't change the rear speakers yet as a subwoofer would be much more beneficial to you and something you can add later on.
Other options would be this head unit, will sound and look better. It also has high pass/ low pass filters and subwoofer control so you'd have more control of the sound later on if you add amplifiers and subwoofers later on.

You could also add in a powered subwoofer with the original head unit and front speakers but I've never used them before so am not sure of the quality. Something like this should be half decent though:

Remember you will need a wiring kit for it so add in another $30 or so for that.
I'm thinking that if you have no plans to spend any more on the stereo and that you listen to bass heavy music then the powered sub and the cheaper head unit might be the best for you.

I'd Say , It Depends on what you need on your System ,
Yeah Don't Go for Canadian Tyres ,
Use German or Japanese Ones , Also Use All Weather , so you won't change them every Season .

Back to the Sound system Now
If your Car Supports the 2-Din Stereo use one .
Also If you only need radio and music , i'd say go with a No CD/DVD Unit , Only a Digital Media Receiver one.

After Trying a lot of the new products on market now-a-days .
I would say go for The JVC brand .
After Trying it , it is One of the best available .
Go To JVC DRVN and Se what they have ,
Also They Support All Speaker Sizes so you won't Cut any Dashboard of Extend The Rear Shelf for installing ,
Also if you need instruction I will provide you With every thing you might Need .

OK Now ,
For your budget :
I would say , Speakers , 500 Watts Oval shaped for A Nice Bass ,
if your car does not support Oval Shapes , get a Round ones , with a Subwoofer in a box and put in the trunk with the Armrest Vent Open , and That's The Shyte I'm talking about here , Damn Nice bass .

See , For the Woofer , get the size you want for the Radius depending on your Boot and what you use of it ,
And For the Amp , Get the in between 400W RMS - 600W RMS .
but installing an amp will cost you more for the usage of Wires and Cables and A Capacitor for a clear sound .
You'll find The Parts at any JVC Retailer :
I will post some recommendations :

Stereo : Your Choice Depending on usage . I prefer the digital media receivers because I don't use CD/DVD's in my car . USB is always better and hold more music and A 320kbps frequency . You'll find a lot of amazing stuff , see your choice and choose ,
All Units on Market have 3 Sound Chips Only , JVC/Kenwwod or Sony Or Other Euro Market chip by Blaupunkt .
Almost The Same .

Speakers : Front . no amp needed just use the stereo and no wiring inside needed . Also if your Front Speakers are running nicely don't change them ,
Also change the Fader in between 3 - 4 front , 7 - 6 Rear , so the audio will rock and you'll never hear outside , only smooth music with no distortion .

Rear : as I said Oval or circular :
These ;

Or These :

AMP :

That One Is Epic . Have that in My Brother's Car , it's EPIC .

Yeah , a Reminder .
While Doing the Harness , Make Sure that the Power Cable Goes on the Left side of the car , and The Speaker Wires Goes On the Right side , or Oppisite side , Depending on your car main harness .
Eventually , What I mean is ,
Keep the Speaker Wires away from the Car Harness , so you won't hear any gas pump noise through the speakers .
because the Power Make A lot of Distortion when close to the Audio cables . by handling that much power .

Resources :
Done More than 10 cars Sound system ,
My Old Car had a 2400W RMS , clear as haven , and Smooth 8 Speakers and 1 1400W woofer , Cracked my Rear view Triangle Window because of the sound . My Set was Kenwood , ( Now Kenwood and JVC are the same company Under license From Panasonic .

Any Questions , i'll be here .
Good luck Mate .
Cheers

I just don't see how the OP can get a decent stereo with a subwoofer for $500. OP is in Canada and prices are more expensive up here. That's also why OP asked about Canadian Tire which is a store up here that sells auto parts. I wouldn't recommend changing the rear speakers as they're mostly just filler anyways. Buy a half decent head unit and some good front speakers and then save up for a subwoofer and amp for later on.
While I like the JVC head units, I use one myself, the speakers and amps are not the same quality as others out on the market yet. With the price of Class D amplifiers now there is also no point in recommending an AB for subwoofers. You have a higher power efficiency, less heat, and smaller dimensions while slightly increasing distortion which you'll never hear in a subwoofer. I've tested that with my JL W6 and my old L7 Solo-Baric and found no differences in sound, using sealed boxes of course. Also oval speakers produce more distortion as round speakers because they can't produce as accurate sound waves because of shape and resistance. The bass output is completely affected by the surface area of the woofer. That's why 6x9" speakers put out more bass than a 6".
Your tips for the installation are very good. You cannot believe how many stereo installs I've had to fix for people because of them not understanding static interference. I loved doing stereo installs but hated dealing with a lot of the customers. I still have customers that whine but with doing oilfield mechanics and electronics they at least have deep pockets.
