I am try to creat good disk configuration for video editing. I make three configurations and i want you opinion about it. Wich one will be better and why ?

I Configuration (Cheap)

1.Disk - 128GB SSD - [Crucial 2.5" SSD M550 128GB] - SYSTEM and PROGRAMS
2.Disk - 500GB HDD - [WD Black 500GB WD5003AZEX] - SRATCH and CACHE
3.Disk - 2TB HDD - [SEAGATE Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001] - PROJECTS,RAW and RIPPED
4.Disk - 1TB HDD - [Seagate 1 TB Barracuda ST1000DM003] - RENDERS

II Configuration (Most Expensive)

1.Disk - 128GB SSD - [Crucial 2.5" SSD M550 128GB] - SYSTEM and PROGRAMS
2.Disk - 500GB HDD - [WD WD5000HHTZ VelociRaptor 500GB] - SRATCH and CACHE
3.Disk - 2TB HDD - [Western Digital Black WD2003FZEX] - PROJECTS,RAW and RIPPED
4.Disk - 1TB HDD - [Western Digital Black WD1003FZEX] - RENDERS

Third Configuration

1.Disk - 128GB SSD - [Crucial 2.5" SSD M550 128GB] - SYSTEM and PROGRAMS
2.Disk - 500GB HDD - [WD Black 500GB WD5003AZEX] - SRATCH and CACHE
3.Disk - 2TB HDD - [Western Digital Black WD2003FZEX] - PROJECTS,RAW and RIPPED
4.Disk - 1TB HDD - [WD Blue 1TB WD10EZEX 64MB] - RENDERS

I was also considering about WD RED and GREEN hard drives, they are even higher in charts than WD BLACK, but they have IntelliPower...

seems like the only thing you are changing is your sratch disk. What kind of video are you editing? If your doing 1080 and lower you should get by with the blue or black. If you are doing RAW and like 2K+ you might want to invest in a good SSD honestly. My buddy edits 2.5k video Raw and using a SSD as a scratch disk has drasticly improved his performance. Doesn't have to be super fast but yea. that or go with the Velociraptor.

yes, editing 1080p and lower. I was thinking about SSD as a scratch disk but i have some doubts about it.

1. What minimum size scratch & cache disk schould have ?
2. SSD disks are expensive. Is the 120GB capacity of ssd for cache, scratch not be too enough ?
3. Those disk have limited life span. Moaybe choose for sratch, cache HDD ?

For 1080 a 120Gb might be enough not sure I don't do it so much anymore. Depends on how much video you work with.

A lot of video. I Am afraid, that SSD as a scratch disk will be soon dead after my work....

oh no no no SSD's these days lasts YEARS of 24/7 writes. some are claimed to live 100+ years. I don't think that would be an issue. if it does fail its because of defects which normal HDD will have as well. Its up to you. I mean with 1080 a regular HDD will work. If you can get like a 10k or 15k RPM drive that would be better but they get hotter.

So, the SSD wil be better as a OS&Programs and SRatch/Cache, than seperate two disks ? If yes, i am thinking about 256GB. What about this model ?

Crucial MX100 256GB

that one would do pretty well. for 1080 that should be plenty fast. If i was working with RAW I'd def go for like a Samsun EVO with 550 Read and 450-500 write vs the 550 read and 300 write. and for 1080 256 should be plenty big for a scratch disk. Do you work with compressed or uncompressed video when editing? That If its compressed then no issue. Uncompressed i should still be big enough for 1080. Out Black Magic when we do 2.5K Raw will fill up a 256gb SSD with like 10-15 minutes of fotage on it. Just sucks up that SSD. With each frame 10-15 Megs at 60 FPS it adds up quick!

Scratch disk use depends on which software you use. For example pRemeire pro defaults the scratch drive to the projects saved location. The scratch disk will hold/store all the files for the project so the size of the drive will depend on how many projects you have which is unlike photoshop CS versions which only use the scratch drive for temporary stuff.

I will be using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Blender. Work with 1080p compressed video and uncompressed 20GB-30GB video files form VHS rip in 768x576. I am afraid that Crucial 256GB will be not good enough to handle such a big files :(

So far I chose two disks.

1. WD Black 1TB WD1003FZEX - PROJECTS,RAW and RIPPED
2. WD WD10EZEX Blue 1TB - RENDERS
